Neighbourhood News Update: 01 July 2022

NEIGHBOURFOOD CONNECTS V&A FOOD ECOSYSTEM

On the 24th June we launched the beginning of a multifaceted food initiative called ‘neighbourfood’ focused on exciting new food offers, a CSI partnership and new restaurants (Mythos, Tang, Now Now, and more) that will soon be joining the V&A neigbourhood. The key pillars of the campaign are centred around the joy of sharing, communal eating and giving back. The launch event was attended by V&A restauranteurs, our partners and collaborators and media personalities Siba Mtongana and musician Mandisi Dyantyis.

To join us on our journey, visitors are invited to take part in a series of sandwich making sessions at Makers Landing on Fridays, starting 08 July to provide support to our beneficiaries through our partnership with Ladles of Love. Click here to read more.

Foodpreneurs shine at Makers Landing

On 24 June, Makers Landing hosted a graduation ceremony for its third group of food entrepreneurs who participated in our incubator programme. Six small businesses, namely, Afro lunchbox, Shekina Bake House, Ukutya, Ever Peckish, Cookie Jar Co, signed up to the programme in February, five of which were female-owned. All six focused on growing their customer base during their training. Click here to read more.

You can meet all the graduates at the Makers Landing Dockside Beer Experience taking place tomorrow. Be at the market between 10h00 and 17h00 and experience their culinary talents first-hand.

Chef Mmabatho named in the global 50Next

We congratulate Chef Mmabatho, founder of the Emazulwini restaurant at Makers Landing who was named ‘hospitality pioneer’ in the 50Next List, an international initiative by The World’s Best 50 which recognises game changers in the art of good eating at an event in Spain last Friday.

“What we are trying to achieve is inclusivity and it’s the perfect time for that. For a while, traditional African cuisine in South Africa was seen as something that couldn’t be fine dining but in the past two years, I have had the honour to meet a lot of young black creatives passionately sharing their food and stories” – Chef Mmabatho.
