It’s our birthday month! Let’s celebrate together!

The month of September is a special one at the V&A Waterfront for a few reasons. Not only is it the start of spring, it’s also Heritage Month in South Africa, when we celebrate our nation’s diverse culture and heritage. And it’s our birthday!

Join us as we blend the past and the present in a joyful celebration of the month of  September. We’re taking a look at some of the things we’ve done since our last birthday, and we’ll also be showing you some of the ways you can celebrate your own birthday for free at the V&A Waterfront!

The past year at a glance

Our birthday is one of our favourite times of the year, not only because we get to celebrate alongside our visitors, but also because it’s a chance to look back at how far we’ve come since this time last year! Since September 2022, there has been loads of moving and shaking in our neighbourhood.

In October 2022, we announced that the international foodie phenomenon Time Out Market would be opening at the V&A Waterfront towards the end of 2023 (we’re getting close!) with a curated mix of the city’s best culinary and cultural experiences.

December saw our neighbourhood gearing up for another year of the Joy from Africa to the World campaign, which swept the precinct into a magical festive world of art in time for Christmas, and we welcomed visitors to the refurbished Alfred Mall, a boutique offering of authentically African design, art and craft.

In February this year, we welcomed back the around-the-world sailing Ocean Race for a celebration of the sea, sailing and sustainability. And, after months of anticipation, The Wheel reopened in March at a brand-new location, The Lawns on Breakwater Boulevard.

As May came, and with it the winter chills, we found new ways to keep warm and inspired with Night Feast, a dynamic event showcasing South Africa’s top musical performers, award-winning chefs, street food vendors and an array of family-friendly activities. And June saw the return of our Neighbourfood campaign.

Finally, last month’s Women’s Month celebrations saw the unveiling of the new ‘Crown Chakra’ sculpture.

Can you believe all this (and much more) has happened since our last birthday? We’re excited to see what the next twelve months will bring!
