16 Aug 2024 SLOW FASHION FESTIVAL COMES TO THE WATERFRONT Picture: Twyg Join us on August 17th at the Watershed for a day dedicated to slow fashion! Fast fashion has greatly impacted our planet, but together, we can drive change. We’ve teamed up with Twyg, a platform committed to sustainable, circular, regenerative, and ethical living, to bring their Slow Fashion Festival to our neighbourhood as part of the Our Better Nature campaign. The event will inspire a more sustainable approach to clothing, with an exciting lineup of activities for visitors to enjoy. See full breakdown below: Mend and Repair: Skilled menders will help attendees repair their clothing while sharing stories about fashion and sustainability. Clothing Swap: Participants can bring up to 10 clean, good-condition items to swap for tokens, allowing them to shop from a preloved clothing collection. Make a zero-waste T-Shirt with Cape Town Craft Club: Andie Reeves of Cape Town Craft Club will demonstrate how to make a zero-waste T-shirt. Kawandi quilting demonstration: Thimbles will show how to hand quilt using scrap fabric. Build your own mending kit: Create a personalized mending kit with guidance from Michelle Jones-Phillipson (R50 fee). Panel Discussion: Watershed fashion tenants discuss operating a sustainable fashion business, moderated by Jackie May. Featured tenants include Our Earth Age, Helon Melon, Research Unit, One of Each, and Artclub and Friends. Traditional African Fashion Discussion: Siviwe James and Erica de Greef from AFRI will unpack how and what we know about traditional African fashion clothing and its sustainability. Speakers at the event include: Erica de Greef: Curator, educator, and founding member of the African Fashion Research Institute. Siviwe James: Researcher and archivist exploring Xhosa culture through visual and sonic archaeology. Andie Reeves: Cape Town-based artist and teacher specializing in embroidery, weaving, and sewing, founder of Cape Town Craft Club. Safiyya Karim: Intersectional justice activist and Co-Country Coordinator of Fashion Revolution South Africa, focused on ethical fashion. Michelle Jones-Phillipson: Sustainability practitioner with 30 years of experience, active in various environmental and ethical clothing initiatives. LAST CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE ‘SELF AS A FORGOTTEN MONUMENT’ AT ZEITZ MOCCA 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝘼𝙨 𝙖 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 is the first museum solo exhibition by Mame-Diarra Niang presented by Zeitz MOCAA. Organised as a survey of the artist’s practice over the past decade, the project brings together significant bodies of work in dialogue, in a spatial choreography. Closing on 18 August, the exhibition celebrates Niang’s prolific practice, one characterised by an exploratory, abstract and subversive approach to lens-based media working across photography, moving image and immersive audio-visual installation.
