Neighbourhood News Update: 08 March 2024

WATERFRONT PILOTS WIND ENERGY

Our neighbourhood continues to be a testbed for sustainable alternatives be it for water, waste and energy management and this week our operations teams oversaw the installation of four vertical wind turbines imported from Germany that will run for the next 12 months to assess their viability as an addition to our energy supply.

Installing a renewable energy system in our neighbourhood is one of the best ways to save money while reducing our impact on the environment and these small-scale vertical wind turbines of the helix type, located at the Silo District of our neighbourhood, offer the ability to string multiple units, similar to streetlights, to accumulate additional electrical output for our precinct. The Waterfront has already achieved a 40% reduction in its energy consumption through its forward-thinking initiatives.

THE WATERSHED EARNS GREEN STAR RUNNER-UP SPOT FOR OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY

The Watershed was recently recognised by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) as a runner-up for the 6-star Green Star highest-rated building for its existing operational performance. This achievement underscores our commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency in the built environment.

The Watershed is the Waterfront’s flagship enterprise development space with more than 55% of the space dedicated to small business with 234 small businesses employing over 1 000 people in a building that uses low energy and has a higher occupant satisfaction with regard to thermal and lighting comfort.
