30 years of Blessing the Fishing Fleet

Last week the Waterfront hosted the annual Portuguese Festival which takes place on Jetty 2 and has taken place in our neighbourhood for over 30 years. Its main event is the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet which signals the beginning of the new fishing season and serves as a chance to pray for the fishermen and the upcoming fishing period.

The gathering is largely attended by the Portuguese community and features live entertainment, traditional food stalls and a beer garden for visitors to enjoy. All proceeds from the event go towards the Portuguese Cultural and Welfare Centre, a team dedicated to helping members of the community who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Large scale City events contribute to positive footfall

September saw the return of large-scale major events in the City which our neighbourhood benefitted from. This was particularly the case with the Rugby 7s World Cup held at the Green Point stadium on the second weekend of September followed by the Gun Run the weekend after. These events continue to drive foot traffic to our precinct especially restaurants and taverns seeing the benefit. In addition, we continue to see a growing number of international visitors across the city who come to partake or attend these events.

With the festive season drawing closer, and lockdown rules a thing of the past, we anticipate a successful holiday period with international and domestic travellers exploring all the entrainment and activities within our neighbourhood.
