DIANA SEBOKE & RAINBOW ARTZ JOIN WATERSHED We are pleased to announce some inspiring new developments at the V&A Waterfront’s Design Lab. Launched in partnership with the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), The Design Lab is our dynamic, living retail “laboratory” that offers local creative entrepreneurs hands-on experience in running a store. Since April 2021, the annual programme has provided extensive training and mentorship, helping creatives take meaningful steps toward a sustainable future in retail. Over the last year, the Design Lab has seen tremendous success, generating R1.24 million in sales and becoming a valuable platform for local talent to flourish. This year, we’re proud to share that two gifted artists from the 2022 cohort have opened their own independent stores within the V&A Watershed. Diana Seboke Diana Seboke Zitha, an acclaimed artist from Limpopo, has brought her innovative crochet work to Watershed. Known for combining traditional African aesthetics with contemporary flair, Diana’s creations showcase intricate patterns and vibrant colour palettes that pay tribute to local craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Her pieces are more than art; they represent a deep commitment to sustainability and honour the rich stories of her culture. Rainbow Artz Tavengwa Dahwa, the visionary behind Rainbow Artz, also debuted his store at Watershed. Through Rainbow Artz, Tavengwa presents an array of functional wire sculptures and colourful art pieces that reflect his dedication to, creativity, and local talent. With a range of styles that bring positivity to any space, Rainbow Artz has quickly become a platform for accessible and impactful art. A new group of rising creative entrepreneurs has been hand-selected by the Craft and Design Institute and V&A Waterfront to join the next iteration of the Watershed Design Lab. For the sixth consecutive year, the V&A Waterfront Marina, has achieved Blue Flag status for the 2023/2024 season. Awarded by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), the Blue Flag status highlights our commitment to top environmental standards, safety, cleanliness, and quality visitor amenities. One of our latest test project was the installation of trash-capturing technology within our marine, which traps trash and debris, keeping our marine clean. In addition, the V&A marine team regularly go out on the sweeper, where they use nets to capture any objects and trash floating in the marine. This honour comes after meeting 33 strict criteria, covering everything from water quality to accessibility and environmental education. Our ongoing initiatives reflect our dedication to preserving our marine ecosystems and keeping our coastlines clean and sustainable tourism. LastFriday, , Makers Landing hosted the 2024 Sarmiethon challenge, an impactful initiative by Ladles of Love , in celebration of World Sandwich Day. Image credits: Ladles of Love Corporate teams came together in a spirited competition to see who could make the most sandwiches within the designated time, all in support of food relief for vulnerable communities. With simultaneous events in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, the ambitious goal was to produce 75,000 sandwiches within a single morning. By the end of the day, an impressive total of over 60,000 sandwiches were made, demonstrating a powerful community effort toward fighting hunger. Giuliette Price, originally from Johannesburg, began her musical journey under the influence of her mother, gospel leader Janine Price. After moving to Cape Town in 2021, she quickly became part of the jazz scene while studying Jazz Voice at UCT’s South African College of Music. Giuliette founded the ii V I Jazz Jam to support young jazz musicians and has performed at notable events like the Journey to Jazz Festival and Artscape Youth Jazz Festival.
