WOMAD has brought the ethos, sights, global sounds and rhythms to 32 countries around the world to an audience of millions for 41 years.
Peter Gabriel founded WOMAD in 1982, with his passion based on showcasing diverse cultures from around the world and Africa in particular. He has had a close association with South Africa on many levels. In 1989 he formed The Elders with Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu. His song “Biko” directly addressed the struggle against the apartheid system of racial segregation. In recognition of his many years of human rights activism, he received the Nobel “Man of Peace Award“ in 2006., and Time Magazine has named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
WOMAD promotes human rights and celebrates important anniversaries in 2024 – 30 Years of Democracy and 40 Years of Bishop Desmond Tutu’s Nobel Peace Prize.
The “WOMAD Cape Town Global Sounds” series of activities at The Amphitheatre On Saturday Oct 5 and Sunday October 6 features a myriad of international and local artists who fit into the “world music” genre.
