Afro-Jazz band Mpho & Uvimba

Popular Afro-Jazz band Mpho & Uvimba was formed in 1994 and its members all hail from Guguletu and Nyanga townships in Cape Town.

The 7-piece band which initialy performed under the name “Mpho and Friends”, is headed by well-known Jazz singer Mpho Motheane, who has performed with Stimela, Women Unite, Rebecca Malope, Jonathan Butler, an others.  In 1998 the group was selected as the best Afro Jazz band in Cape Town by a Danish radio station which visited South africa to record some local groups. They released their CD “Images of Africa volume 3 – Mpho and Uvimba Band” early in 1999, which spesifically targeted the tourists market.

Apart from Cape Town, they have performed across the Western Cape and the rest of South Africa, under the banner of South African Breweries (SAB). Other companies they have perfomed for are Eskom and Sanlam, Victoria and Alfred Waterfront red nose day, Community Chest Maynardville Carnival and the World summit environmental event, which was hosted by Community Chest.  The group also had a residency at the popular Manenberg Jazz Cafe until the venue closed its doors in the mid-naughties.

Career highlights include appearances at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Afro Festival in Wurzburg Germany, and performances in Japan
