Meet the Facilitators

Elsje Watkins – Crochet Enthusiast
Elsje’s crochet journey began at the age of 9 under the guidance of her late grandmother, Babs Le Grange, and her mother, Joze Ebing, during cherished visits to their family farm in De Rust, Western Cape. Taught alongside her school lessons at Wesbank Primary in Oudtshoorn, crochet was both a creative outlet and a skill she refined over the years. After rediscovering her passion in her thirties while living in Qatar, Elsje dove into the intricate world of amigurumi. Today, she shares her creations on her social media platforms, Eljoz Gifts with Love, blending her and her mom’s names as a tribute to their shared craft.

Elsje’s husband perfectly captures what draws her to crochet: “You make something from nothing.” For her, crochet is all about creativity, imagination, and the freedom to infuse each piece with her unique personality. With endless possibilities, she’s completely hooked!

The incredible variety of yarns and colours available today offers an infinite range of projects, and the best part is the versatility—crochet can be done anywhere, anytime. To Elsje, it’s no longer just an “old lady’s hobby” but a vibrant, modern craft she absolutely loves, loves, loves.

Fowzia Sonday – From Curious Beginner to Crochet Lover

Fowzia is a self-taught crochet enthusiast who discovered her passion for the craft later in life. With a background in social work and a heart for helping others, she balances her time between giving remedial classes to children and supporting community initiatives. Fowzia’s creative journey started when curiosity led her to pick up a crochet hook and dive into YouTube tutorials. Today, her love for crochet is matched only by her dedication to uplifting those around her.

Fowzia grew up in a loving home surrounded by cooking, baking, and crafts such as knitting, embroidery, and candlewicking. Despite her mom’s love for crochet, Fowzia initially dismissed it as too old-fashioned. Years later, while working on literacy programs at a school, she overheard people talking about crochet. Her curiosity was piqued, and that same afternoon, she bought a ball of wool and a hook. She taught herself to crochet, and she’s been “hooked” ever since.

Zeena Naidoo – Crafting Creativity Beyond Her Years

At just 13 years old, Zeena Naidoo is already making waves as a visual artist, author, and artist of her own South African brand, Green Experience. A firm believer that age should never be a barrier, Zeena combines her creative talents with a passion for uplifting communities and inspiring others. A top academic achiever and future student at the Academy of Maths, Science, and Technology, she’s driven by a vision to merge art with purpose.

Crochet became Zeena’s passion after it was introduced as an extra-mural activity at school. Captivated by the craft, she embraced it wholeheartedly. With unwavering support from her parents, she quickly immersed herself, transforming her creativity into tangible, heartfelt creations.

For Zeena, crochet is an empowering journey of self-expression. It’s a meditative process where she creates entirely with her own hands, pushing her skills further with every project. Just her hook, her wool, and her imagination; it’s a simple yet powerful way to craft beauty and meaning.
