For the past nine months, the Craft and Design Institute (CDI) has worked closely with 17 community arts organisations in areas across the City. The goal: to nurture talent and enable over 1,000 formerly unemployed creatives to earn a living, become re-energised, and generate new works. This weekend, a selection of the artists will get an opportunity to showcase their creativity at South Africa’s leading tourism hotspot, the V&A Waterfront.
Supported by the national government’s Social Employment Fund (SEF) to assist creatives across the Cape, the project has helped these artists unite in their communities, form new creative groups and develop their talents – all while earning.
“They have all been through a journey of creative discovery – this showcase event at the V&A Waterfront is the culmination of the efforts, giving a much bigger audience a chance to see the artists’ works in person,” says CDI Group CEO, Erica Elk. “These are some amazing previously hidden local creative gems, many of them youth.”
Cape of Creativity promises everything from song and dance to theatre performances, visual art, murals and crafts. Live performances will take place at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre and visual arts and crafts will be situated at the neighbouring Watershed building, from 11:00 – 17:00 on Saturday, 01 June 2023.
