Cape Town singer and songwriter Al Petersen, is swiftly becoming one of the most sought after solo artists in the Western Cape. Her music is soulful and comes straight from the heart, and she has an extensive repertoire of cover songs, as well as a growing collection of her own compositions. Though music has always been her passion, it never occurred to Al to pursue it as a serious career choice until February 2014, when she started uploading some of her live performance videos. The positive response from fans shocked her into realising her own potential and marketability as a solo musician.
Al has a unique and attractive voice. Every song is an expression of reality as she sees it or has experienced it, and is loaded with passion. As a regular busker at the Cape Town V&A Waterfront, she manages to communicate easily with any audience, seemingly touching each listener in a personal way. She has a soft spot for children, and when they do approach her during any busking performances, she welcomes them to come closer, and then to their delight, will play a favourite especially for them, e.g. something from a latest released children’s movie.
Among the artists who inspire her are Michael Jackson, Eva Cassidy, Tracy Chapman and Freddie Mercury – to mention but a few. It is near impossible to categorise Al into any specific genre of music, as she has a very distinctive identity. Many have said that she reminds them of Amy Winehouse; mysterious and soulful at times, bright and energetic the next moment.
Al is able to adapt to a host of styles, from old school pop, to blues, hip-hop, jazz, gospel, RnB and more.
Catch Al Petersen at Silo District @11h30 and later at the Amphitheatre @14h00!
