Entries open for Circular Innovation Challenge 2024

ENTRIES OPEN FOR CIRCULAR INNOVATION CHALLENGE 2024

We’re calling on innovators, change-makers, and thought leaders, to participate in the 2024 Circular Innovation Challenge, and contribute to the shift from a linear to a circular economy — one where resources are conserved, waste is minimized, and ecosystems are preserved and protected. This challenge is a key part of the Waterfront’s “Our Better Nature” platform, which is grounded on the belief that when we act from our better nature, nature gets better.

If you’re based in Southern Africa and have developed a product, technology, or service that aligns with the three circularity principles, we encourage you to enter and be part of a collective effort to build a more sustainable future.

The three core principles for a Circular Economy:

  1. Designing waste and pollution out of the system;
  2. keeping materials at their highest value;
  3. and regenerating nature.

The Litterboom Project, winner of the 2023 Circular Innovation Challenge, is South Africa’s first large-scale river interception program aimed at stopping marine plastic pollution. They repurpose intercepted waste into products like glass coasters and garden stakes in their Innovation Hub where they train wastetrepreneurs to develop and grow their products.

Finalists will pitch their idea to a panel of Circular Economy experts at Vikāra’s annual conference from October 22-24, 2024. The winning entry will receive:

  • A R200k cash investment into your business
  • Tailored training and mentorship
  • Access to a network of related businesses and organisations.
  • The opportunity to test your product or service at the V&A Waterfront, if relevant.

Entries are open until September 13, 2024. Visit the Solve website for more information, here.

This is a collaboration between Solve@Waterfront, an NPO established by the V&A Waterfront, to give effect to strategic Shared Value Ecosystem projects, with the aim to amplify the positive social, economic and environmental impact of the V&A into surrounding communities, Vikara Institute, a non-profit international development organisation which uses a systematic lens to address global development challenges, and V&A Waterfront.

ZEITZ MOCAA EXHIBITION – THE OTHER SIDE OF NOW

On 22 August, The Other Side of Now, a solo exhibition of film and sculpture by Vietnamese American artist, Tuan Andrew Nguyen was showcased, which will be open for viewing until 20 July 2025.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙉𝙤𝙬 explores the transnational entanglements created by colonisation and war. Particularly attending to the erased voices of Vietnamese, Senegalese, and Moroccan history, the exhibition proposes a space for communal healing and remembrance.

Nguyễn’s films move along spectrums of fact and fiction, past and present, memory and forgetting. He uses the power of storytelling to create speculative visions of difficult histories, opening a pathway of empathy and healing for both the subjects and viewers.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙉𝙤𝙬 forms part of an ongoing series of in-depth, research-based solo exhibitions by Zeitz MOCAA that bring into focus and contextualises the practices of important artists from Africa and the Diaspora, and those whose work focuses on seminal topics in African history.
