EAT, DRINK AND BE THE DIFFERENCE

Have you noticed how most memories and good times are, in some way or another, centred around food? Food has an incredible way of connecting us, while it sustains us, always reminding us that we are all one. From melktert to morogo, our most memorable food moments are the ones that fill our hearts with goodness – and our bellies with joy.

But here at the V&A Waterfront, our neighbourhood’s approach to food goes beyond what we eat and drink. We’ve set the table with kindness – and we make space for everyone at our table.

Because that’s what the Heart of Filling the Belly, our new food-for-the-greater good initiative is all about.

Because in our neighbourhood, food is a way to sustain livelihoods, create futures and enable food dreams. It’s a way to tell stories that celebrate cultures and honour heritages. Plus, it’s also a way to create an important bridge between local farms and happy tummies.

Through the V&A Food Market, the Oranjezicht City Farm Market and Makers Landing, our innovative food incubator at the Cruise Terminal – alongside our many restaurant options – we see food as the perfect way to inspire brighter futures, while creating memories that last long after the explosion of taste and flavour.

By taking a fresh look at food systems, we help create a recipe for a better world. With this in mind, we leapt into action, working with our food ecosystem and civil society partners to bring hope and ease hunger in these tough times. For over a year, we’ve been helping to feed Cape Town communities in and around our waterfront home.

At the moment, in the face of lockdown restrictions, our biggest and most urgent concern is the plight of our neighbourhood eateries, who need your support to weather this storm. When you order from our restaurants and put food on your own table, you’re also putting food on theirs – as the eateries in our neighbourhood create employment for many households.

Have a look at the restaurants in Cape Town that are currently open in our neighbourhood – pop in to collect your food or order a delivery – now is the time to tuck in and help out!
