5 Jul 2024 WATERFRONT INSTALLS NETTING SYSTEMS TO FIGHT OCEAN POLLUTION Marine Supervisors & Skippers, Tobelani Mkoboko and James Botha installing a netting system on the end of a stormwater pipe. In a partnership yacht service company Action Yachting, and leading seafood business, Sea Harvest, we have recently installed netting systems across our harbour. This pipe trash-capturing technology, manufactured by Action Yachting, prevents litter and debris from entering our ocean. Currently, there are four netting systems placed throughout our harbour, one at West Quay, outside The Cape Grace Hotel and three at North Quay in the Alfred Basin. This capturing method uses durable nets made from high-density polyethylene (a flexible plastic material), which are installed at the ends of stormwater pipes. These nets then trap litter, which, collected, and properly disposed of, contributing to cleaner waterways. Marine Supervisor & Skipper, James Botha detaching the net from the stormwater pipe; Marine & Canal Assistant, Gavin Malan disposing of the collected litter before the net is reattached. OUR BETTER NATURE, CELEBRATING SUSTAINABILITY IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD On Saturday, June 28, we launched our sustainability campaign, “Our Better Nature”, with an incredible parade by Cape Town Carnival and a captivating Ocean Light music festival. This ocean-themed event featured magical light displays followed by musical performances by award winning singer, songwriter, and poet Pilani Bubu, as well as busking group Mmino Melodies, who all added a magical touch to the evening. The celebration was a call to action to our visitors as well as our tenants to come together and embrace the possibilities of a greener future. If you missed it, there’s still a chance for you to be a part of the journey by experiencing Our Better Nature’s key activations and events which include activities for the family, festivals, concerts, as well as art installations around our neighbourhood. An interactive map of the art route can be found here. Learn more about Our Better Nature, here.
