Makers Landing

In this neighbourhood, we come together to eat, to make, to learn and to share.

Here we share what we know, and we learn what we don’t. We play with flavour, dare to dream and cook up the world we want to live in. We indulge our inner foodie and we discover worlds that we never knew existed. And we make our table bigger, by breaking down boundaries and connecting with each other through the magic of local food and it's diversity.

Our table is extended to anyone who has a food story to tell or who simply delights in the South African food journey.

There is a seat for everyone at our table. Come and join us.

The Makers at Makers Landing are food producers and small businesses who celebrate a farm-to-table and nose-to-tail approach.

Here the very best of South African food and flavours is celebrated – with everything from aromatic curries, to locally produced cheese, to fresh koesisters and freshly ground coffee.

Makers Landing is a new V&A food community, a place where connections are formed and positive change is initiated -

One plate at a time.

What is the kitchen incubator?

The Makers Landing Food Lab incubation programme, created in partnership with the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund, aims to support job creation and skills development in the local food industry. The structured programme offers opportunities to qualified start-ups and existing small food businesses that can show that they will benefit significantly from mentorship, training and affordable access to a licensed commercial kitchen space. This programme runs over six months, with two sessions a week, of two to three hours each. The course content, which was developed by Stellenbosch University’s LaunchLab and industry experts, is a combination of online modules, in-class learning and individual assignments. These are supplemented with technical expert support and weekly mentor meetings. In addition, participants will have access to a commercial kitchen space, as well as the opportunity to participate in Makers Landing programming and events, further potential funding and market opportunities. We are specifically looking for early-stage entrepreneurs (start-up, aspirant and grassroots) with limited access to resources, in the packaged foods, food service and catering industries.

What is the demo kitchen?

The Makers Landing demo kitchen and event space plays host to a variety of food related experiences and events, from children’s baking and cooking classes, to fine dining experiences hosted by renowned chefs. The area can also be rented out for shoots, food demos and events. The space allows access to the fully fitted commercial kitchen and opens up into the public areas of Makers Landing, offering a unique space to showcase and celebrate South African food and products. This creative kitchen studio and event space is also part of the mix where once can delve into food photography, facilitate education workshops or host pop-up events where guest chefs can cater to intimate gatherings and tailored experiences. Prices to rent this space range from R3 500 for a half day during the week, to R60 000 for a full month.

What is 100 Flavours?

At any given day, there’s something to experience at Makers Landing. From chefs and foodies browsing the seasonal produce and best cuts of meat each morning, to locals enjoying a quick bite with friends in the afternoon or scooping up the freshest ingredients for their evening dinner. There is also an ongoing programme of events and pop-up activities, and we invite people in to be part of our South African food community – get in touch or pay us a visit if you’d like to host a gig or exhibition, tell your story, or simply gather your crew together and pay us a visit.
