Kids Market encourages young entrepreneurs to shine

The V&A Kids Market is an exciting platform for children to showcase their creative businesses to the greater V&A Waterfront community – and make money too! The recent market had nearly 30 kids selling their handmade products, while learning what it takes to run a profitable venture from a young age. As part of our programme, we are exploring ways to support and upskill these next-generation business owners, partnering with industry leaders to offer workshops and supply useful information that will set these young-preneurs up with a solid business grounding.

“I wanted to be an entrepreneur from a young age, because my mom is one too. I made about R250 profit from selling a twirly spinner toy, bunnies made from socks, and some of my own artwork. I’m saving the money to buy a skateboard. The Kids Market was a great learning experience, and I’m already thinking of creating bracelets and key chains for the next one.” – Silhle Madlingozi (11)

“I used R450 of my savings to start Pop by Amirah, and made R2,000 at the Kids Market from selling hot-chocolate bombs, popcorn and cake pops. I used the money to buy more ingredients and now I sell my treats from home. I got the idea for hot-chocolate bombs on TikTok. It’s a chocolate ball filled with hot chocolate and marshmallows, and it melts when you put it in warm milk. Having this business has taught me about the different types of chocolate and now I know how to temper it too!” – Amirah Khan (8)
