For 110 years, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) has been the foremost orchestra in Africa. The most active one in the country, the CPO is also extremely versatile, performing with the foremost local and international artists. As a multi-functional orchestra, the CPO is the indispensable partner to Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet and delivers a world-class orchestral service to all communities, participating in festivals, presenting choral, pops, rock and family concerts as well as concerts in schools across all genres of music.

Liam Burden was appointed conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in June 2024. Liam was a finalist in the fourth Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition (now the SA Conductors’ Competition) and brings a great deal of experience to an orchestra has been involved with for many years. As he says, “After working with the orchestra in an ad hoc capacity over the past years, I am honoured to have the opportunity to conduct the wonderful musicians of the CPYO on a full-time basis.
