Hey Cape Town, your iconic sign turns one!

HEY CAPE TOWN, YOUR SIGN IS TURNING ONE!

Can you believe it? It has officially been a year since the unveiling of the iconic Cape Town sign in our neighbourhood. Located outside The Alfred, it has become a must-visit spot for both locals and visitors alike – a place where we all pause to take in the beauty of the bold letters spelling out “CAPE TOWN.”  Though, it’s more than just a photo-worthy attraction; each letter carries a deeper story, reflecting the unique landscape, rich history, and diverse communities that make up our beloved city.

A gift for Cape Town

When this sign was first unveiled, it wasn’t just an installation — it was a gift to all of us, a tribute to the special connection between Capetonians and our city. Against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic mountains surrounding our city, the sign tells the story of Cape Town’s unique landscape and its people.

Each letter represents a different mountain peak:

C – Hout Bay Mountain

A – Hottentots Holland Range

P – Paarl Mountain

E – Stellenbosch Mountains

T – Atlantis Bobbejaanberg

O – Lion’s Head

W – Table Mountain

N – Cape Point’s Upper Funicular

Each letter’s 3D contours were designed to reflect the surrounding flora, fauna, and stories, creating a tangible connection between the city and its natural heritage.

To further honour Cape Town’s creativity and rich culture, four local artists were commissioned to craft artworks inspired by the mountains represented in the sign. Delving into the contours, wildlife, and flora of their chosen peaks, each artist wove their personal connections and interpretations into their designs. These artworks breathe life into the sign, mirroring Cape Town’s unique biodiversity and history.

Lighting up our neighbourhood

One of the most enchanting aspects of the Cape Town sign is its vibrant, dynamic lighting, which changes throughout the year to mark special occasions. Whether it’s a romantic red glow on Valentine’s Day, a dazzling rainbow for Pride Month, or festive hues during the holiday season, the display embodies the spirit of our city and its celebrations.

Beyond its symbolism, the illuminated sign contributes to the lively atmosphere of our neighbourhood, creating a welcoming space where visitors can relax and soak up the lively energy of Cape Town’s nightlife. Next time you’re at the Waterfront, make sure to stop by, snap a pic, and take a moment to enjoy the view. Stand among the peaks that represent our city and feel the layers of Cape Town’s beauty, because you belong here.
