CAPE TOWN, May 24, 2025 – This year’s Chinese Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu) celebrations will culminate in an exhilarating dragon boat race on Saturday, 24 May, at Battery Park on the V&A Waterfront. Traditionally held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, Duanwu commemorates Qu Yuan, the devoted statesman and poet from the Warring States period whose legacy lives on through spirited boat races and the sharing of sticky rice dumplings, or zongzi.

Building on last year’s success, ten teams will paddle fiercely against the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain. Competitors will battle in 100-metre and 500-metre sprints, with a tug-of-war race on the water adding extra excitement. Spectators are invited to line the Battery Park shoreline to cheer on the crews and enjoy cultural performances, traditional music, and a showcase of Chinese heritage throughout the afternoon.

Saturday – 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
