The launch marks an exciting milestone for sustainable marine transport, setting a new standard for eco-friendly travel in our neighbourhood. With zero emissions, they contribute to cleaner air and water while giving passengers a sustainable way to experience the Waterfront and our surrounds. This initiative adds to our growing collection of sustainable transport choices at the V&A, including The Green Cabs, which aligns with our core mission of driving green sustainability and setting new standards for eco-friendly urban experiences. EXPLORING OUR ICONIC LANDMARKS WITH OUR FREE AUDIO TOUR Our neighbourhood is one of Cape Town’s favourite places to explore, loved by both locals and visitors. Beyond the shops, restaurants, hotels and attractions, however, lies a history dating back centuries ago. Many of the buildings you pass now once had very different roles, each telling a story of the city’s maritime past. Visitors to our neighbourhood are invited to explore this history with the V&A Waterfront Audio Tour. Offering visitors an immersive way to experience the neighbourhood’s history, while uncovering the stories behind our iconic landmarks. Highlights include popular favourites, such as: The Old Power Station and Pump House, built in 1882 and expanded in 1904, originally supplied electricity and fresh water to the harbour and now houses Time Out Market Cape Town, a vibrant food destination. The Grain Silo Building, completed in 1921 as part of Cape Town’s grain storage system, was the tallest building in the city at the time. In 2017, it was converted into the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) and The Silo Hotel, preserving its industrial character while creating a landmark for contemporary African art. The Victoria & Alfred Hotel, originally the North Quay Warehouse built in 1904 for coal storage. In 1990, this storage was converted into one of the V&A Waterfront’s first luxury hotel – marking our shift from working dock to mixed-use destination.
