24 May 2024 LUVSIDE GMBH LAUNCHES WIND ENERGY PILOT PROJECT IN THE WATERFRONT Yesterday evening German wind turbine builder, Luvside GmbH held the official ceremony to the launch of its four LS Double Helix small wind turbines at Zeitz MOCAA in the Waterfront’s Silo District. The inauguration of these vertical wind turbines marks another milestones in the Waterfront’s sustainability journey, showcasing the potential of wind power in supporting local energy needs, particularly in the windy coastal regions of South Africa. As part of a pilot project under the Renewable Energy Solutions Programme (RES Programme) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action’s German Energy Solutions Initiative, these turbines represent the first step in establishing LuvSide GmbH’s innovative solutions on the South African continent. How does it work? The LS Double Helix small wind turbines harness wind energy through their innovative helical blade design, converting it into electricity, with the purpose of providing sustainable and reliable power generation, particularly in urban areas. Speakers at the event, from left to right: Tanja Werheit, German Consul General Cape Town; Petro Myburg, Senior Manager of Sustainability at V&A Waterfront; Rolf Hoffmann, CEO of LuvSide GmbH; Rodney Love, CEO of Energy Systems Africa; and Claudia Ardelean from the German Energy Agency (RES-Project). “These small-scale vertical wind turbines are not only aesthetically pleasing, but their ability to capture wind from any direction and compact size offer the opportunity to string multiple units, like streetlights, making it ideal for the urban environment of the Waterfront. The units will run for a year, during which time we will test feasibility to ascertain if there is potential to scale up this technology, and possibly incorporate it into our larger sustainability strategy.” – Petro Myburgh, Senior Manager Sustainability, V&A Waterfront.
