6 Feb 2026 Last year proved to be yet another milestone year for our neighbourhood, welcoming 25 million visitors to the Waterfront, contributing R11 billion in retail sales for 2025. A 7% increase from the year before. The festive season delivered exceptional results, with December alone seeing over 3 million visitors and R1.4 billion in sales across our retailers and restaurants. The festive season ended on a high note with our New Year’s Eve celebration, which attracted 200,000 attendees and reached a global audience when internet personality IShowSpeed livestreamed the festivities to 47 million YouTube viewers. These strong performances underscore our neighbourhood’s role as a major economic driver, supporting more than 83,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing over 1.5% to the Western Cape’s GDP. Each sculpture is a chapter in her story – from the Whale’s gravity to the Ray’s dance, to the Wave’s renewal. Together they form a myth of restoration: suggesting that the boundaries between human and nature, self and sea, are illusions of our own making.
