What is the Artist Alliance Programme?

Artists Alliance is a movement to elevate emerging artists by providing them with the space and opportunity to turn their talent into marketable skills, profitable businesses, and sustainable careers.

Selection Process & Judging Criteria

Applicants will be selected based on the quality and collective presentation of their creative work, motivation, and demonstrated entrepreneurial endeavours.

The selection process is managed by V&A Waterfront’s Artist Alliance team, partners agency and mentors

Judging Criteria:

  • Talent and Proficiency: Skill level and expertise in your craft.
  • Motivation/Drive: Passion, ambition, and dedication to creative pursuits.
  • Innovation in Craft & Vision: Ability to push boundaries and offer fresh perspectives.
  • Entrepreneurial Pursuits: Entrepreneurial mindset, ability to create opportunities, and business acumen.
  • Distinctiveness of Work: Uniqueness and originality of your submitted pieces.
  • Alignment with Transformation: Contribution to providing opportunities for new voices in the industry.

Judging Panel:

The judging panel will comprise of two industry specialists, participating Artist Alliance mentors, two Artist Alliance representatives, and a representative from partner agency. These criteria will guide the final selection of the 6 cohorts.

Who Can Apply?

We're looking for creatives who:

  • Are between 18 and 30 years old.
  • Are based in Cape Town.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Are actively pursuing a career or business in the creative industry, full-time or part-time.
  • Are available to attend the full two-month incubation programme.
  • Align with our goal of transforming and providing opportunities to new voices in the industry.

We will select one creative for each of the following disciplines:

  • Illustration
  • Graphic Design
  • Copywriting
  • Animation
  • Music Production
  • Videography

When can I enter?

Entries open on 1 June and will close on 31 July.

Important Dates:

  • 1 August: Applications officially open
  • 31 August: Applications close.
  • 1 – 11 September: Top 42 applicants shortlisted by V&A Waterfront Artist Alliance, Agency, and Mentors.
  • 15 – 18 September: Top 42 invited to a selection soiree to meet mentors and the panel. Shortlist reduced to top 30; unsuccessful candidates informed.
  • 22 – 26 September: Judging Panel conducts interviews with top 30 candidates. Shortlist reduced to 18 creatives.
  • September 29 - 30: Judging panel finalizes the top 6. Selected students and unsuccessful students are informed.
  • October 1: Final cohort announced publicly.
  • October (First Week): Programme starts.

How do I apply?

Your application will be assessed based on the quality and promise of your work and entrepreneurial journey.

Submission Requirements:

  1. Visuals: 5 pieces highlighting your creative work.
  2. Motivation: A short statement explaining why you are best suited for the programme.
  3. Artist Bio: Your professional artist biography.
  4. Entrepreneurial Journey: Details on how you have pursued your entrepreneurial endeavors.

Where do I apply?

  1. You can apply directly on the V&A Waterfront website.
  2. If you do not have access to an internet connection you can visit the V&A Hub, Merchant House, Dock Road between 12:00 and 14:00 on a Monday to Wednesday [AV4] during the month of July 2023.

Who should enter?

Any artists between the ages of 18 and 30, who are based in Cape Town, have an entrepreneurial spirit and are on the cusp of their own career or creative business in the field of Visual Arts, including: Illustration, Graphic Design, Fine Art (Sculpture), Animation, Music Producing, videography

How do I apply?

You will need to submit a portfolio (visuals highlighting your work), with 5 artworks, a short motivation as to why you should be given this opportunity and an artist biography, to the specified application links (TBC)

Do I have to be an established artist?

No, the programme is designed to elevate young and emerging artists and turn talent into marketable skills.

Can I be a multidisciplinary artist?

Yes, while we select one artist per category, we welcome applications from those with skills across different creative fields. Your strongest creative work in one of the listed categories should be the focus of your application.

Can I apply if I know one of the mentors or someone on the judging panel personally?

To ensure fairness and an unbiased selection process, it is recommended that you disclose any personal connections with mentors or judging panel members in your application. This will allow for appropriate measures to be taken to maintain impartiality.

How can I highlight entrepreneurial journey through my motivational statement?

Beyond the specific section for your entrepreneurial journey, use your motivational statement to articulate your business aspirations, how you've already attempted to commercialise your art, your understanding of the market, and how the incubation programme will directly support your business goals.

How will applicants be judged and selected?

Applicants will be selected based on the work they have submitted. We will select 1 student for each of the following categories: Illustration, Fine Art, Videography, Music Producing, Animation and Graphic Design. In the selection process, the quality and collective presentation of your creative work, along with the motivation and demonstration of your entrepreneurial endeavours, will hold significant importance. The shortlisting process to select the initial top 42 candidates will be managed by the Artist Alliance, Creative Nestlings and Mentors. Candidates will be judged on the uniqueness of their work, talent, and proficiency of the submitted pieces, whether they fit the profile to help transform and give an opportunity to new voices in the visual arts industry, their entrepreneurial pursuits and lastly candidates will be judged based on the strength of their motivation statement or video.

What happens if I am shortlisted?

42 candidates will be shortlisted and contacted. These candidates will be invited to a soiree to meet the Artist Alliance team, mentors, and peers. From this group, 30 will be invited for interviews before the final 6 are selected.

When will successful applicants be announced or contacted?

A cohort of 6 people will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of representatives from the Artist Alliance, Creative Nestlings and selected industry experts and publicly announced on 28 September. The programme will start in the first week of October 2023 and run for two months until 30 November

What happens if I am not in Cape Town for the full duration of the programme?

Applicants must be based in Cape Town and available to attend the full two-month incubation programme from October 1st to November 30th, 2023. Non-attendance for the full duration may result in disqualification.

Do I need a computer and fast internet to attend the programme?

Yes, candidates must have access to the internet to utilize some programme materials and resources. Furthermore, it is essential that candidates possess the necessary equipment to complete assignments and projects relevant to their chosen category (e.g., a photographer must have a camera, a graphic designer must have appropriate equipment and software to create designs, etc.). The V&A Waterfront will assist with internet connectivity to applicants who need, this will be communicated to successful applicants.
