Shop from our heroes on Global Recycling Day

How about supporting local entrepreneurs who care about Mother Nature this Global Recycling Day, 18 March? Three of our tenants – Watershed Design Lab, Recycled Flip Flop Sculptures and Sealand Gear – are repurposing what others would consider waste and turning it into top-notch products.

Watershed Design Lab

Our Workshop is a Langa-based NPO started by social designer-maker Heath Nash. This shared workshop is accessible to anyone in the community and is used as a training ground for emerging black creatives. It is a free-to-use space, with many tools and different types of ‘waste’ materials that can be repurposed into products. Its entrepreneurial members who are participating in the Watershed Design Lab create everything from wooden bread boards and one-of-a-kind denim artwear to baskets made from recycled PET bottles and jewellery fashioned from computer keys.

Recycled Flip Flop Sculptures

Recycled Flip Flops Sculptures sells hand-made products carved from discarded flip flops, all made by Davis Ndungu. These bright and colourful sculptures are not only eye-catching, they also promote a green lifestyle by reusing and recycling discarded plastic items, and this helps to clean and preserve the environment. Here trash is turned into treasure. The sculptures are mostly of animals found in and around South Africa, and are fun, creative interpretations that make excellent and memorable gifts.

Sealand Gear

Besides its flagship Experience Store at the Dock Road Junction, Sealand Gear has a conveniently located kiosk in Victoria Wharf where you can find a variety of duffle bags, backpacks, pouches, laptop sleeves, T-shirts and beanies. Sealand is strongly in favour of environmentally responsible production, and all products are created by means of an upcycling process, using sustainably sourced fibres such as hemp and organic cotton. Its merchandise is functional, and of the kind of quality that will stand the test of time. Respect for the planet, an enthusiasm for outdoor living, and inspired designs with a local flavour lie at the root of what Sealand stands for.
