V&A Bulk Infrastructure Updates

Essential Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

The V&A Waterfront remains open and fully operational, with retailers, restaurants and attractions welcoming visitors as usual.

While life at the Waterfront continues uninterrupted, we are investing behind the scenes in essential infrastructure to support the long‑term resilience of our precinct. This includes important upgrades to our bulk water system.

These upgrades reflect our commitment to responsible precinct management, helping to future‑proof critical services while reducing water losses and improving system performance.

DRIVERS

To maintain traffic flow during construction, two outgoing lanes and one incoming lane on Dock Road will remain open at all times. Traffic marshals will be in place during peak periods to assist with movement, and visitors are encouraged to use Helen Suzman Boulevard via Portswood Road as the preferred access route.

PEDESTRIANS

Safe pedestrian routes are maintained at all times, with additional wayfinding signage in affected areas to help visitors move around with ease. To further support access across the precinct, free electric shuttle services operate on weekdays only.

Timeline of updates

Construction will take place in carefully managed phases over a 33‑week period, from mid‑April to the end of November, with no full road closures in place to minimise disruption.

While much of this work happens behind the scenes, it plays a vital role in supporting smooth, everyday experiences for everyone who lives, works, trades and visits the V&A Waterfront.

The map below outlines what’s happening, where, and when during the construction period.

Why are we doing these updates

Water resilience is a critical part of how we care for our precinct and its ecosystem. Upgrading bulk water infrastructure supports our broader sustainability objectives - balancing operational reliability with responsible resource management.

These investments reflect a long-term approach to precinct stewardship ensuring that the V&A Waterfront remains a well-managed, future-ready neighbourhood for generations to come.
