Makers Landing Food Lab Incubation Program is an immersive 4.5 month food-focused business program for qualified food start-ups and existing small food businesses. Incubatees in the program will significantly benefit from affordable access to a food-focused business fundamentals course, a licensed commercial kitchen space, technical assistance and training in food industry techniques and business operations. Applications for Cohort 4 are now open, and the next program will start in August 2022. Makers Landing is looking for candidates that already have a food business, are actively selling, and have been in operation for less than three years. The candidates should have: A desire to formalize and expand their food business and a plan for how to achieve that growth. Experience operating a food business, formally or informally, for at least 6 months. Openness to feedback, input and a willingness to make changes to grow your business. A personal support network. An entrepreneurial spirit, enthusiasm and persistence. A vision for the business. Admittance to Makers Landing Incubator Program is a highly competitive process that takes into account many factors. Promising candidates will be interviewed by Makers Landing and an advisory committee of industry professionals. There is limited space in the kitchen and course. PROGRAM COST & COMMITMENT: As any entrepreneur knows, there are hard costs to running a business. While the fees we charge are highly discounted thanks to the Jobs Fund and the V&A Waterfront, all entrepreneurs that join the program must pay a monthly sum to have access to the training, network and facilities we provide during the incubation program. This participation fee is a R1,500/month. This fee covers the program cost and includes use of the commercial kitchen to the value of R10,000 per month.. After the program, we continue to offer supported kitchen use. You will also need to apply for the relevant health and safety certifications necessary to run a business, without which you will not be able to operate legally and grow. The cost for the R638 certificate is R25 through the city of Cape Town. You will also need to register your business and get a CIPC. Each successful applicant will need to commit to being available to attend classes, complete assignments and coordinate meetings with mentors and coaches. In class training twice a week, for at least 3 hours a day, at Makers Landing, in the V&A. Complete pre-lesson and post-work reading and assignments (4 hours weekly on average). Scheduled meetings with your mentor or coach twice a month for 90 min per session. A minimum of 8 hours per month cooking in the kitchen with the Kitchen Lead’s supervision.
