We are proud that our products are 100% South African, and confident that they can stand up in terms of quality and design to any leather products out there. After we’ve sourced our skins, each and every piece is oiled and hand-dyed with four layers of natural leather dye according to the finish we are after. This process is laborious, but it imparts a richer, deeper colour to the leather which cannot be matched by any factory or machine process. Next we apply a leather dressing, which not only seals in the colour but also adds a vividness and sheen to the final article. Thereafter, the different pieces of the product being made are cut, sorted and finally sewn together with an age-old hand-sewing technique called the saddle-stitch, which uses two needles at the same time for maximum strength and quality. This ‘slow’ approach to manufacture is why we can confidently offer a ten-year guarantee on all our products. Our approach is to combine the very best elements of ancient leather craftsmanship with modern technology and design sensibilities, to create products that are built to last for generations. Like the Miya-Daiku master craftsmen, we allow the material to determine the final outcome, leaving any naturally occurring imperfections to form part of the finished product in an aesthetically pleasing and organic way. Due to this approach and the handmade nature of our products, slight variations in finish do occur and we celebrate them, especially when held up against all the homogenous, mass-produced stuff out there. This, coupled with the organic nature of quality leather, produces what we call ‘design details’ that can never be repeated.
Every one of our products is authentic and unique, and that is what keeps it so exciting for us, and for many of our valued and loyal clients. design@researchunit.co.zahttps://www.facebook.com/ResearchUnit?ref=hlhttp://instagram.com/ResearchunitWe design and manufacture high end luxury leather goods, From our deceptively simple flagship billfold through to more complex and challenging designs like the RU Scoutpack with detachable Notebook inner, our emphasis remains the same as it was when we started - designing products for the modern lifestyle that are clean, utilitarian and made to last. This is why we only make products that we would use ourselves, and also why we offer a ten-year guarantee on all our workmanship.Ground Level, Watershed078 113 6772 Erin-Lee Petersen, Director & Store Manager Research UnitGP0|#e01dc74b-0de0-4926-aeeb-eb67718fb81b;L0|#0e01dc74b-0de0-4926-aeeb-eb67718fb81b|Portswood Garage;GTSet|#66350d48-bdbd-451d-ba1b-946c4cbd3b47http://www.pinterest.com/researchunit/078 1136772https://twitter.com/ResearchUnitRUGP0|#c4e6bea0-e1b4-49b1-af5f-642672b71be8;L0|#0c4e6bea0-e1b4-49b1-af5f-642672b71be8|Luggage and Leather;GTSet|#01ea5f03-4e62-4b20-b4f5-e1fbf43cc654www.researchunit.co.za N/AV&A Waterfront | Research Unit Research Unit designs and manufactures high end luxury leather goods. We started small, working from home at first before taking the plunge and moving into a tiny studio, followed shortly thereafter by another move into our current premises, a sunny and bright space with plenty of room for expansion on the outskirts of Cape Town. Since these humble beginnings in 2011, we have focused all our energy on building a leather goods brand that is recognised as an example of quality, innovation, minimalism and elegance. ”Research Unit is about redefining how people relate to the concept of luxury. For us, luxury is not about a price tag, nor is it determined by exclusivity or elitism. It is not about ego or trend. We believe that genuine luxury is inclusive, innovative, timeless, personal. It is about how a particular product makes you feel when you touch it, wear it, give it to someone special as a gift. It is about the story and soul behind a product, the little imperfections that make it perfect in every way, the creative process and the manufacturing process and the heart and the hands.” Chad and Erin-Lee Petersen, RU Founders, July 2014.
1
