South Africa’s most significant World Heritage Site is accessible by ferry from the Nelson Mandela Gateway. A fully guided 3.5-hour tour that walks you through the country’s path to democracy.
Some places carry the weight of history differently. Robben Island is one of them.
Ferries depart daily from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Clock Tower, carrying up to 150 passengers on the 30-minute crossing. The 3.5-hour tour includes a bus ride past the lime quarry, the kramat, the leper graveyard, a church designed by Sir Herbert Baker, and the former maximum security prison. A former political prisoner guides part of the tour.
The triple-storey Nelson Mandela Gateway museum, connecting the V&A Waterfront to the island, includes exhibitions, an auditorium, a museum shop and several eateries.
Book in advance as this is one of the most sought-after experiences in Cape Town.
