South Africa's oldest commercial gallery, founded in 1913, now in a pair of heritage buildings on Portswood Ridge. Everard Read and its sister space CIRCA run one of the most consistent exhibition programmes in the country.
The Everard Read Gallery Cape Town opened in 1996 in a heritage building on Portswood Ridge that dates back to 1889. 137 years ago, this was a Victorian double-storey home, a character which the gallery has retained. The CIRCA gallery opened across the road in 2016, adding four more exhibition spaces and an outdoor sculpture garden to the same precinct.
Together, they represent one address and two distinct personalities. Everard Read has the feel of a collector's house stacked with paintings, rooms that feel lived in and a permanent collection of significant South African work on the upper floor. CIRCA has the clean walls and open volumes of a contemporary art space built for installation and large-format work.
Both run a rigorous programme of solo and group exhibitions throughout the year, showing modern and contemporary art from South Africa and beyond. Entry is free. The gallery is tucked away from the main waterfront foot traffic, which means you often have the rooms to yourself.
