21 Apr 2023 Parents, we’ve got you! At Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, there’s never a moment for kids to be bored. Come rain or sunshine, the V&A has children’s activities that fill weekends and school holidays with fun – whether undercover or out in the open. Here are some exciting options from which to take your pick… according to the weather. Indoor fun for kids in Cape Town, at the V&A Cave Golf Cave Golf is a fun and affordable outing, costing just R35 per person. This 18-hole mini-golf game is short and compact yet challenging enough to make a contest of it. Unlike normal golf, this one’s set indoors at the V&A Waterfront Scratch Patch, so you never have to worry about the weather ruining your plans. PlayDate SuperPark Adventure, fun and fitness… that’s what PlayDate SuperPark is all about. Located inside the Watershed building, this world of physical challenges and obstacle courses is where anyone under the age of 12 can spend the day playing with giant Lego, tackling a 3D maze, cruising on a zipline or halfpipe, trying out the high-line-rope course or climbing over towers. There’s even a toddler area for kids aged 0-6. Rollercade Rollercade is the most fun you can have on eight wheels. This vibey roller-skating and amusement locale includes pool tables and arcade games, making it enjoyable for the entire family, and a great option for kids’ parties too. Roller-skate rentals mean anyone can join. Just remember to bring your socks! Scratch Patch Wading through thousands of gemstones will keep children busy for hours at Scratch Patch. For as little as R30 for a small, empty bag, kids can take their pick of shimmering stones to fill it with. The ‘cave’ floor is covered in everything from rose quartz to tiger’s eye, jasper and amethyst, making it a mesmerising outing where kids are literally spoilt for choice. Two Oceans Aquarium Everything at the Two Oceans Aquarium is an eye-opener for kids, but the I&J Children’s Play Centre is particularly enjoyable, thanks to educational puppet shows that happen three times a day, and marine-themed arts-and-crafts activities that instil kids with a love for the ocean. Time your visit to catch the penguins and sharks being fed. Children’s outdoor play at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town Battery Park Battery Park is an urban playground like no other. Besides the jungle gym, swings and rocking horses, there’s a safe scooter path for children to ride while parents relax on the grass. Mini-soccer and basketball courts make play dates and parties fun, while the skateboarding and scooter park, with a bowl, quarter pipes, rails and more, invite full days of action. Hamleys Train Take a ride around the Waterfront on the Hamleys Express, enjoying a wonderful journey that passes shops and restaurants, and gives you a different perspective of the vibrant neighbourhood (while also allowing parents a moment to take a breath). Find the station alongside Ferrymans, in front of the Victoria Wharf playground. Marine Wildlife Walk The Marine Wildlife Walk helps kids explore the incredible marine wildlife that surrounds our neighbourhood. We’ve created eight lookout points from which to observe the animals as they go about daily activities such as feeding, breeding, resting or playing. Spot penguins, seals, geese, jellyfish, lobsters and more. Outdoor Playgrounds Kids can’t get enough of our two playgrounds. They’re the perfect spot for parents to have a break while children hop on slides, jungle gyms and climbing walls. One is conveniently situated outside the Food Court at Victoria Wharf, while the other is next to the historical Clocktower. Stand-up Paddling (SUP) Create memorable moments with your child by hiring a SUP at Battery Park to explore the neighbourhood’s canals. The wave-free waters are the perfect way to take it easy on the stand-up paddleboard while enjoying the beautiful Waterfront surroundings. First-timers can book lessons to grow kids’ confidence over time. Shopping for kids at the V&A Waterfront An entire shopping experience awaits parents and children at the V&A Waterfront. Popular clothing stores include Cotton On Kids, Earthchild, Keedo and Naartjie, while the children’s sections at Pick n Pay, Woolworths, H&M, Guess and Zara offer super options too. If you’re looking for unique local designs, Watershed stores like Sam & Seb, Granadilla, Providence, Mu&Me and Sojo all bring SA flare to classic children’s clothing. When it comes to toys and other fun goodies, you won’t be disappointed. The V&A Waterfront is home to the iconic toy store, Hamleys, as well as Toy Kingdom and stationery retailers Yokico, PNA and Typo. At the Watershed you’ll find a fabulous variety of local kiddies’ toys and gift brands, like Lovely Stuff, Mamita & Me, Pogoman and Shongololo Toys. More kid-friendly activities at the V&A Waterfront Look out for our regular V&A Kids’ Market, Makers Landing kids’ food workshops, Artjamming activities and more.
