Heritage Day brings a range of experiences to our neighbourhood, from exhibitions and heritage tours to dining experiences, live music and performances.

Here are a few ways to celebrate this Heritage Day in our neighbourhood:

• Heritage Day at Zeitz MOCAA

On Thursday, 24 September, Zeitz MOCAA will open its doors, with free access for visitors from 10h00 to 18h00. Celebrate the richness and diversity of South Africa’s cultural heritage with access to exhibitions, multilingual architecture tours, cultural performances and creative workshops for all ages, including the beloved Silo Tote Making Workshop and a brand-new children’s workshop. Visitors can also discover a new immersive experience that allows you to see art through the eyes of the Museum’s Art Patrol.

The multilingual architecture tours will explore more than a century of the Grain Silo’s history and its remarkable transformation into the museum we know today, offering unique insights into the heritage of this iconic building.

The dedicated outdoor food court, powered by Makers Landing, will fuel the entire family for the day, serving local flavours and live musical performances that bring the spirit of Heritage Day to life. Visitors can also look forward to a variety of live performances by the V&A Buskers and other local groups.

• Discover the Waterfront’s Heritage

Explore the history of our neighbourhood with Reinventing the Tavern of the Seas, our free GPS audio tour. The one-hour walking experience starts at the iconic Cape Town sign and takes visitors through the Waterfront, with stories about its history, people and connection to the sea playing along the route.

How to access:

1. Download the free VoiceMap app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
2. Sign up using Facebook or email.
3. Select Cape Town and download the free Reinventing the Tavern of the Seas tour.
4. Once downloaded, plug in your earphones and tap Start when you arrive at the Cape Town sign.

The tour can be downloaded using an internet connection and then enjoyed offline. Free Wi-Fi is also available across the neighbourhood.

• Heritage Day Dining at Cape Grace

Cape Grace will mark Heritage Day weekend with a special edition of its Terroir & Table series at Heirloom Restaurant. Executive Chef Wesli Jacobs will be joined by VUUR’s Chef Shaun for a collaborative five-course menu, with lunch and dinner sittings on 25 and 26 September.

• WOMAD Kidz 4 Kulture Day

WOMAD Global Sounds celebrates the rich diversity of music from around the world, with a vibrant line-up of artists performing global rhythms and contemporary sounds. Performer announcements and programme updates will be shared ahead of the event.

• Calling Us Home In Concert

Follow the story of Grace, an African princess who arrives in the docklands of an American city after fleeing war in her homeland. As she builds a new life, Grace finds friendship, love and danger, while holding onto her dream of returning home.

Last week, the Cape Town Cruise Terminal marked the start of the 2026/27 cruise season with the arrival of the Pacific World, carrying 1,397 passengers and 655 crew members. Passengers were welcomed with local music and entertainment as part of Tourism Month, setting the scene for another busy cruise season in Cape Town and the Western Cape.

The Pacific World operates as part of the Peace Boat fleet, a Japan-based non-governmental organisation that promotes peace, human rights, sustainable development and international cooperation through global voyages and educational programmes.

South Africa’s first harbour-based fishing net recycling project has recycled nearly 25 tons of end-of-life fishing net during its first year of operation. Based at Collier Jetty in our neighbourhood, the project is a partnership between the South African Deep-Sea Trawling Industry Association (SADSTIA), OCEAN Action Network, Ocean Plastic Technologies (OPT) and Mtubana Networks Recyclers, with funding from the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC’s) Ocean Stewardship Fund.

Between 3 September 2025 and 31 August 2026, the project collected end-of-life fishing net from three companies: Oceana contributed 13,898.68 kg, I&J 7,961.69 kg and Sea Harvest 2,625.03 kg, bringing the total to just under 25 tons. Of this, 19,928.33 kg has already been recycled into flakes.

Together, these partnerships are helping to reduce landfill waste, prevent marine pollution and demonstrate the potential of circular solutions within the fishing industry.

Lulasclan, a small business based at the Watershed, recently played a part in creating the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry trophy, designed to celebrate the longstanding rivalry between South Africa and New Zealand. Founded by artist Bonolo Chepape, Lulasclan designed the South African half of the trophy, incorporating the core DNA of the Rainbow Nation into its pattern.

The world-first trophy consists of two sculptural forms representing South Africa and New Zealand, which connect through magnetism to form a single piece. The design reflects the distinct identity of each nation while creating a shared symbol of one of rugby’s longest-standing rivalries.

In celebration of World Duchenne Awareness Day, The Little Optimist Trust and Little Optimist Sailing Therapy Academy hosted a series of experiences for children living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive genetic condition that affects muscle function.

Located at Battery Park, Little Optimist Sailing Therapy Academy uses sailing and outdoor experiences to create opportunities for children living with life-limiting conditions to experience adventure, build confidence and enjoy time with their families.

On Saturday, nine-year-old Carl and his family spent the day exploring our neighbourhood, with several V&A Waterfront tenants contributing to the experience. The family enjoyed a cruise with Waterfront Charters, where Carl’s wish to see a dolphin came true when a pod appeared alongside the boat. They then stayed at Radisson RED V&A Waterfront before taking a scenic helicopter flight with Sports Helicopters the following day.

On Sunday, Little Optimist welcomed 12 boys from Astro Special Needs School for a day at the Waterfront. The group visited the Two Oceans Aquarium before heading to the Little Optimist Sailing Academy and Battery Park, where they enjoyed a picnic and spent time at the skate park.

The weekend highlighted the shared value that can be created when organisations and businesses across our neighbourhood come together.

• Our Local

New to our neighbourhood, Our Local is a Cape Town restaurant and greenhouse café known for its plant-filled setting and wholesome comfort food. Find them at Alfred Mall.

• VEJA

French footwear and accessories brand VEJA is known for its focus on sustainable design and distinctive, understated style. The brand has now opened at Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre, near The Witchery.

• Havaianas

Known for its colourful rubber sandals and laid-back summer style, Havaianas is a Brazilian footwear brand with a global following. The store has recently undergone a revamp, giving it a refreshed look.

• Ladurée Kiosk

Renowned for its iconic macarons and Parisian-inspired confectionery, French luxury patisserie Ladurée has added a new kiosk near Centre Court.

• Ray-Ban

Known for iconic designs including the Aviator and Wayfarer, Ray-Ban has moved its standalone store into a new space across from Yuppie Chef, bringing a refreshed experience to its neighbourhood presence.

• Comedy Night at Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge

Enjoy an evening of stand-up comedy featuring South African comedians Mel Jones, Carl Weber and Lunga Tshuka. Line-up subject to change.

• Children’s Spring Holiday Programme: Skybound: Sparkle & Explore
