InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town sets new green standard for South African hospitality

Our neighbourhood has reached another milestone in its sustainability journey, with the InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town receiving a 5-Star Design rating from the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA). The hotel is the first in South Africa to achieve the distinction under the newly piloted Green Star New Build Version 2 ratings tool, recognising the environmental performance and sustainable design of its refurbishment.

The refurbishment has delivered a 29% reduction in energy use and 79% reduction in water use compared to the baseline, while more than 80% of the existing structure and façade has been retained, helping to reduce upfront carbon emissions. It also incorporates material and landscape salvage, improved communal spaces, mobility connections and heritage-sensitive design.

The rating forms part of our broader approach to sustainable development across the precinct. Our neighbourhood is now home to 30 Green Star-rated buildings and has reduced carbon emissions by 47% since 2009, while continuing to invest in renewable energy, water resilience and responsible waste management.

From rooftop solar and renewable energy procurement to seawater cooling, desalination and on-site waste recovery, these initiatives are helping us reduce our environmental impact while building a more resilient neighbourhood. Our green leases also encourage tenants to improve their water, energy and waste performance, extending our sustainability efforts across the wider precinct.

Symposium - Spring Is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs

Running until 23 August 2026, the exhibition explores histories of resistance to colonial oppression in South Africa and Mozambique before turning to the complex conditions of liberation and transformation.

The symposium expands upon several of the exhibition's central themes, revisiting key moments in Southern African art history and considering the pedagogical approaches developed through Zeitz MOCAA’s education programme.
