Between free museum mornings, budget breakfast specials and a loyalty card that shaves a discount off your bill, there are plenty of affordable restaurants in Cape Town and free things to do here, once you know where to look.
An Affordable V&A Waterfront Day Plan
Start at Quay Four's Upper Quay for the standing breakfast special: two eggs, bacon rashers, grilled tomato and toast, with a harbour view included. Walk to Nobel Square, then browse the rotating exhibitions at Southern Guild in the Silo District. Spend the afternoon in Battery Park: a free chessboard, a skate park, and a scooter track are all available, alongside sunny picnic spots. Then, walk along the promenade and watch the seals on the jetty.
Dining and Restaurant Specials
For deliciously cheap places to eat, Tiger's Milk serves burgers and chips at an easy price point, and Nando's remains a reliable favourite for the neighbourhood.
Locals aged 60 and older can apply for a free V&A Senior Icons card, which unlocks 5% off at participating stores Monday to Friday and 15% off every Tuesday, both on presentation of the card or valid ID.
Our Specials & Offers page also lists set-price lunch menus and seafood or steak specials well under the à la carte price, and features some of the best cheap restaurants at the V&A Waterfront that not many visitors know about.
Free Cultural Activities and Museum Experiences
Nobel Square is free for all and is built around Claudette Schreuders' four bronze statues of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates: Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela. Look for the fifth sculpture too, Noria Mabasa's Peace and Democracy. Street musicians play in the square most days, and they’re worth a stop to enjoy the music on the way to Zeitz MOCAA, the world's largest museum of contemporary African art (free for under-18s year-round and for African citizens on Wednesday mornings; don’t forget your ID or passport).
For a free cultural experience taking you through the history of the V&A Waterfront, download the free ‘Reinventing the Tavern of the Seas’ walking tour on the VoiceMap app and learn as you explore.
Among the Waterfront's best affordable activities, Battery Park's chessboard, skate park, and scooter track cost nothing to use, and parking there is free on weekends. It’s a wonderful stop for the whole family.
Budget-Friendly Family Activities and Discounts
Inside The Watershed, be.UP Park Pop-Up gives under-eights a supervised play space, and Cave Golf across the road offers an 18-hole indoor course beside the Scratch Patch, so you can really make an afternoon of it.
The Two Oceans Aquarium's After 3 Special means reduced rates for adults and kids, with free entry for kids under four. And here’s a top tip to keep in mind when your birthday rolls around: your ride on The Cape Wheel will be free that day. With a short walk between these destinations, it’s a budget-friendly celebration to remember.
Mix and match if one category isn't enough: a Battery Park morning, a Wednesday at Zeitz MOCAA, and a Quay Four breakfast can all fit into a single outing with little planning.
