At the V&A Waterfront, people come together to work, visit, create and belong. More than a destination, it's a neighbourhood of opportunity, supporting 30,000 direct jobs and contributing R45.9 billion to the economy.
A new stretch of Cape Town’s Atlantic coastline is being opened up to the city. Over the next 15 to 20 years, this R20 billion-plus development will bring new homes, hotels, jobs, public space and a protected bay for swimming, kayaking and boating. A 540-metre seawall will help protect the coastline, while a new coastal walkway will connect the V&A directly to the Sea Point promenade.


Yesterday, the Water Mural Project, a partnership with the Embassy of Denmark, A.P. Moller – Maersk, Table Mountain Water Source Partnership and WWF in partnership, as well the V&A Waterfront and City of Cape Town revealed two murals at the Waterfront’s Makers Landing, curated by Denmark artist Eske Touborg and Cape Town-born Nadia Fisher popularly known as Nardstar. The project celebrates the collaboration of partners, and the importance and power of the art to affect change and tangible shifts in global policy and development.

The event to reveal the murals was attended by V&A Waterfront CEO, David Green and the Danish Embassy delegates, including Flemming Møller Mortensen, Minister for Development Cooperation and Minister for Nordic Cooperation, Felicity Purchase, Speaker of the City of Cape Town council, and artists, Eske Touborg and Nadia Fisher.
The South African Minister of Water and Sanitation entered a Memorandum of Understanding with Denmark co-operating in the field of water in November 2015. The strategic water sector programme is headed jointly by Danish and South African ministries, but further includes stakeholders from local government, water utilities, research institutions, industry organizations and private sector. The purpose of the program is to support the South African government agencies and other relevant stakeholders in developing and implementing strategy, management, and regulatory frameworks to contribute to the National Water Resource Strategy (2013), namely that “water is efficiently and effectively managed for equitable and sustainable growth and development.”
At the end of the of 2021, the V&A Waterfront was requested by the Danish Embassy to assist in realizing a public diplomacy and awareness project that would create dynamic, captivating, and thought-provoking murals around the themes of Water (Water use and Water resource management
The goal of the project was to produce two large scale murals collaboratively with local and Danish artist and for these artworks to be placed in sites that are highly visible and contextually relevant. The V&A Waterfront played critical role in identifying the sites and working with the arts collective, Free the Walls in supporting them during the production of the murals at Makers Landing located at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal.

Makers Landing Food Lab Incubation Program is an immersive 4.5-month food-focused business program for qualified food start-ups and existing small food businesses. Incubatees in the program will significantly benefit from affordable access to a food-focused business fundamentals course, a licensed commercial kitchen space, technical assistance and training in food industry techniques and business operations. The way the public holidays fell this year meant that there were a number of long weekends which subsequently brought more visitors to the property more frequently. During this period we also had the return of the Two Ocean’s Marathon which is a mass participation sporting event that would have seen some of the participants and spectators spill into the property before and after the event.
The Watershed continues to perform well with more workers returning to co-working spaces rather than traditional offices. The on-going trend of recovery continues and each year we’re closing the loop on a month by month basis with 2021 figures consistently better than 2020.
