ENTRY AND PARTICIPATION RULES FOR THE CIRCULAR INNOVATION CHALLENGE
SOLVE@WATERFRONT (Referenced as “SOLVE” in this document)

1.GENERAL ENTRY CONDITIONS

1.1 For individuals
● The competition is open to Southern African (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini) residents only.
● Entrants must be over the age of 18 years.
1.2 For businesses
● The competition is open to Southern African registered businesses only.
● Businesses may be a subsidiary of an international business, but the local Southern African business must be the entrant into the competition.
1.3 For all entrants (Individuals and Businesses): The prize package includes:
1.3.1 Tailor-made training / mentorship according to the needs of your business to the value of R100 000.
1.3.2 Should you have a prototype of your product, technology or service, the SOLVE team will work with you to identify opportunities to test this on the V&A Waterfront precinct. It will also support in implementation, and in setting up relevant monitoring and evaluation.
1.3.3 As part of the assessment process, finalists must be willing and able to undertake an evaluation and co-creation session with the core sponsor team. This will be an online or in-person session of no more than 120 minutes.
1.3.4 The following persons are excluded from this competition and may not participate –
1.3.4.1 a director, member, partner, employee or agent of, or consultant to V and A Waterfront Holdings (Pty) Ltd (“V&A”) and/ or SOLVE and/ or the Vikara Institute; any other person who directly or indirectly controls or is controlled by V&A, SOLVE or the Vikara Institute.
1.3.4.2 a supplier of goods or services in connection with this competition; and
1.3.4.3 the spouses, life partners, business partners or immediate family members of a director, member, partner, employee or agent, consultant, supplier of goods or services in connection with this competition, or any other person who directly or indirectly controls or is controlled by the V&A.

2. HOW TO ENTER
2.1 All entries and supporting documents should be submitted online at https://solve.waterfront.co.za/
2.2 Entries close at midnight on Friday, 13 September 2024 (South African time). No late entries will be considered unless by previous written arrangement.

3. WINNER SELECTION
3.1 Entrants will be assessed in the first round of judging by the core SOLVE project team. The assessment is done within the context of SOLVE’s desired outcomes of this programme and is not negotiable.
3.2 Eligible and successful entrants will go forward to a second round of voting by the organising team. Further information may be requested of entrants, either digitally or by phone call.
3.3 The top-scoring entries will be submitted to the judging panel which will consist of representatives of the sponsoring parties, along with subject-matter experts. This panel will then present the short-listed candidates.
3.4 The short-listed candidates will be required to pitch their innovations in person to the judging panel and an international audience at the Vikāra Institute’s annual Market Systems Symposium on 22 October 2024.
3.5 For these short-listed candidates, the following costs will be covered by the sponsors, for one representative per finalist only: return flights from airports in Southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe) to Cape Town, return transfer costs from Cape Town International Airport to the V&A Waterfront; and two nights’ accommodation.
Competition Prizes

3.6 The opportunity to test your product, innovation or service at the V&A Waterfront, which represents significant exposure. Note: the V&A Waterfront precinct has an annual footfall of over 26 million visits of which 56% are Capetonian, 14% domestic, and 30% international.

Tailor-made training / mentorship according to the needs of your business to the value of R100 000.

Cash investment into your business to the value of R200 000.

SOLVE@Waterfront and Vikāra Institute will facilitate relevant introductions to a network of related businesses and organisations.

3.7 It is your responsibility to provide accurate and truthful information on the entry form. If you are selected as a finalist but, despite reasonable efforts, we are unable to contact you based on the information that you provided on the entry form, within 7 (seven) days, we reserve the right to disqualify you from the competition.
3.8 The prizes are non-transferable and cannot be exchanged or converted to cash.

4. GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION
4.1 In the event of unforeseen circumstances or causes beyond our reasonable control, SOLVE reserves the right to cancel this competition, or to change the rules and/or prize(s) at any time by publishing such decision on SOLVE’s website: https://solve.waterfront.co.za/. Although reasonable efforts will be made to contract entrants in such an event, it is your responsibility to check the Website from time to time for any such changes.
4.2 The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence, negotiations or discussions will be entered into to change the decision of the judging panel
4.3 All taxes and/or regulatory obligations in terms of the prizes are the sole responsibility of the winning company.
4.4 Each entrant agrees not to submit any entry that infringes any third-party intellectual property rights, or any other rights, including without limitation, copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or confidentiality obligations, or otherwise violates applicable law, and, further, warrants that he/she is the original producer and sole owner of the works produced for the purposes of this competition.
4.5 By accepting the final prize, the winner agrees that the innovation may, if suitable, be implemented/ tested within the V&A precinct. The winner agrees that the opportunity to test has value, and is part of the prize; and that they will not be compensated in any other way for whatever reason other than the prize amount. (This refers to the testing phase only as agreed between both parties.) The winner retains the sole rights to the intellectual property.
4.6 The winner agrees to their name, works produced and journey being published on any social media platform and in any other form the organisers deem fit. If the entrant has any objection against any specific publication, the entrant has the right to make this known for consideration.
4.7 The organisers and the participating entrants will sign a non-disclosure agreement to ensure protection of intellectual property of both parties.
4.8 Any personal information (including, without limitation, your name, address, postal code, telephone number and/or e-mail address) that you submit on the entry form will be used solely in connection with this competition and will not be disclosed to any third party except for the purposes of the competition, where applicable, unless you agree otherwise, or unless disclosure is required by law or court order.
4.9 In the event that samples of your product(s) are shared with SOLVE, the samples will not be returned to you unless this has been pre-arranged.
4.10 Neither SOLVE, the V&A or the Vikara Institute nor its directors, members, employees, agents, or representatives shall be liable for any loss or damage suffered by participants as a result of participating in the competition, save where such loss or damage is a result of the negligent or intentional acts of V&A and/or its directors, members, employees, agents or representatives.
