How exquisite are these sculptures made from upcycled materials by Joburg artist Hazel Buchan? Commissioned to celebrate our all-new online gift voucher offering, Buchan’s eight joyfully dynamic artworks collectively tell the story of the V&A Waterfront.

We’re for sustainability in all its expressions, and the V&A’s ongoing commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle has played out in novel ways. Last summer’s Joy to the World installation saw talented South African makers refashioning tons of the Waterfront’s traditional Xmas decorations into a riotously unique celebration of homegrown creativity. Likewise, taking our gift voucher online created another opportunity to showcase South African ingenuity via the medium of the V&A’s used gift cards, card holders and leftover gift wrapping.

We’ve had our eye on Hazel Buchan, who’s earned an international reputation for her innovative paper sculptures that bring together all the things she loves the most – typography, paper, illustration and intricately detailed 3-D objects. ‘The V&A Waterfront sculpture was a unique opportunity to have fun with all the elements, never before seen, couriered to me in such a strange time for all of us’ Hazel says. ‘This felt like unwrapping a birthday gift, from bright red ribbon, silver gift packages, directional maps to plastic gift cards. Each element that was sent to me was then deconstructed to make up something recognisable that related to the Waterfront and the majestic Table Mountain’ she says.

Weighing in at a whopping 53kgs, the sculpture in its totality will be on display at the Waterfront as part of our ‘100 Beautiful Things’ Exhibition’ later this year. In the meantime, you can purchase V&A Waterfront online gift vouchers here. And there are two options to choose from; after all, we’re home not only to beautiful objects but also to beautiful experiences!

For birthdays and other special occasions (or to simply show someone you care), indulge your friends and family with an experiential voucher. Happy couples will love hotel breaks, pampering spa days or action-packed water escapades. Culinary enthusiasts can choose from a variety of gastronomic experiences, and kids get a look-in too with a whole array of curated experiences tailored just for them. What’s more, experiential vouchers purchased during lockdown won’t expire, and can be redeemed when V&A attractions reopen.

‘Our cash vouchers are a ticket to the ultimate shopping experience andare ideal gifts for those who seem to have it all. At the V&A Waterfront they’ll find something to take home; from fashion and the best of local design to homeware, exclusive beauty brands and fine foods. The cash vouchers also make thoughtful gifts for those of us who are feeling the pinch during the Covid-19 pandemic.

To redeem a cash voucher, simply visit our Information Kiosks with the online voucher receipt and the allocated value will be loaded onto a gift card, redeemable across the V&A.
