The Porcupine produces Afro-centric pit-fired ceramics, which are decorated with depictions of indigenous wildlife and images and colours associated with traditional African art. Among these Raku-fired ceramic art pieces are large decorated wall plates, jugs, pots, masks and figurines. The workshop, started in 1994, is based at “The Mill” in the beautiful Crags near Plettenberg Bay, and employs 14 trained artisans from the area. The handcrafted ceramics, many of which are utilitarian, are sophisticated and original, and have become collectables over the years. Visitors are welcomed at the factory shop and studio, and in Cape Town, these producst are on offer at the stall in the Watershed.
