Summer is...listening & being mesmerized by these great performers and bands, during our Festive Season 5pm Concerts:

Cecil Peters 
Date: Monday 7 December
Time: 17h00 – 18h00
“South Africa’s own Pavarotti”, Cecil John Peters or “Buchu vannie Berg”, as he is sometimes called, the first Khoi opera singer in S.A. He was nominated as the best vocalist at the annual Cape Minstrel Competition (Klopse-kompetisie) for 7 consecutive years … an achievement, which has not been repeated to date. Cecil has performed in Belgium, New York, Washington and Boston and locally, he often performs with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. His show will consist of well-known light classical or operatic songs like Nessun Norma and The Prayer (Andrea Bochelli),  You Raise Me Up (Josh Groban), IL Divo hits and other secular songs like The Impossible Dream and I Believe, songs from well-known musicals and some gospel songs like I’ll Walk With God, to mention but a few.

Zamar

Zamar, a group of highly-talented and skilled male and female musicians, have created a style that is both traditional & cosmopolitan. This dynamic 5-piece group was founded in the heart of Stellenbosch, and just as one cannot capture the autumnal beauty of Stellenbosch’s vineyards with their rich tapestry of colours, so one cannot capture Zamar passion on paper. One has to be experience their Hungarian rhapsodies, Ukranian folk melodies, South American tangos, Irish folk music, traditional African songs, contemporary classics and much more, first hand to appreciate Zamar’s festive music with the plucking of strings. 

CODA

Their music gained immediate popularity amongst an astonishingly broad range of audiences – CODA’s diversity has resulted in a new style of South African music that appeals to audiences from Soweto to Paarl, from Gugulethu to Bloemfontein and from Dubai to the Seychelles 
 
GIVEN PHIKE

The path of Khayelitsha-based Artist, Given Phike, over the past 10 years has been an interesting one. Since being discovered in 2000 by well-known SA Producer, Gabi le Roux, Given has been involved in a variety of projects, from performing in RnB-, Kwaito- and Hip-Hop Groups, to singing backing vocals for International Superstars such a Josh Groban, Michael Buble and Diana Ross

Nungarin

Nungarin is one of the freshest bands to emerge from the South African music scene. The Cape Town based triohave been together since 2007 and have gone from strength to strength. From the start they were lucky enough to be given the platform that all aspiring musicians strive for. Their natural blend of unique influences and musical abilities has created a genre unto themselves. With a multitude of instruments between them, they have created an
eclectic mix of music that separates them from the pack. Drawing on influences from across the musical spectrum, they have managed to mold together a unique sound that is a pleasure to listen to, and helps give each song a unique flavor.

Zaria

Blending a delicate voice with ethereal lyricism, Zaria’s music is often haunting,
always new, and uniquely her own. Zaria emerged onto the music scene in
2004 both with solo shows and opening for other well established artists such as Karen Zoid.  She was the youngest solo performer in the 2006 Levi’s Vintage Sunday series.

Prime Circle

After nine years and three progressively strong albums behind them, the band comprising Learmonth on lead vocals and guitar, Dale Schnettler on drums, Dirk Bisschoff on lead guitar, Neil Breytenbach on keyboards and Marco Gomes on bass concur that their success is squarely attributed to their ever-growing and genuinely fanatical South African base.

Willem Botha

Willem Botha's new album 'Se my nou' is full of pulsing rhythms in Afrikaans and English. Willem recently won the international Eurostar Awards with the track 'Dis alles n Miracle' from his debut album.

The Riebeek Kasteel Steel Band

The Riebeek Kasteel Steelband is made up of a group of 12 teenagers from the Swartland town of Riebeek Kasteel. The band has been going for 13 years and has an extensive repertoire of popular tunes, jazz , Caribbean and African favourites.

Virtual Jazz Reality with Ian Smith

Formed in 1993 the band V.J.R. still boasts the original line up of Ian Smith (Trumpet & Flugelhorn & Vocals) Andrew Ford (Keyboards & Vocals) Sammy Weber (Bass & Vocals) and Frank Paco (Drums & Vocals). During this period the band has built up a large and loyal following both locally and abroad. The bands first CD release (V.J.R) reached the number one slot on local jazz charts and is aired on radio stations in New York, London, Germany, Denmark and Australia. They have performed throughout South Africa at most major venues and festivals including the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival and performed with top local and international acts such as Jonathan Butler, Jimmy Dludlu, Judith Sephuma, Winston Mankuku, Robbie Jansen, Hugh Masekela, Shakatak, Latoya Jackson, Selalo Selota, Jennifer Jones, Vicki Sampson amongst others..

MICHAEL D & CHANENE AND IKE MORIZ - RELEASES THEIR XMAS CDS

After releasing their debut cd’s in 2007, Michael D  &  Chanene kept themselves busy with shows at theatres, schools, festivals and private functions.  From the Boland to a bitter cold Sutherland, they captured audiences.  At the end of 2008, they toured the Southern Coast with shows at several holiday destinations.

IKE MORIZ: STARRY NIGHT
Mosquito Records London releases Ike Moriz's 7th studio album: STARRY NIGHT. It contains 15 beautifully arranged jazzy adaptions of popular Xmas songs like 'Let it snow', 'White Xmas', 'Silent Night' (in French, English & German). The artist has also created a remix of two of his own original tracks.

Southpaw takes listeners on an inspired journey through unusual “soundscapes”, utilizing right-brain innovation and a daring eclecticism. Southpaw is comprised of four highly individualistic musicians, who manage to fuse an ethereal, uncompromising style from their love of funk, rock, jazz and alternative.

357s Band

Details: 3-piece Rock outfit from Somerset West. The 357s have been around for 2 years, originally starting out as a four piece, the 357s combine blues, rock, sleaze and grunge to create a very unique alternative-punk style.

Stealing Love Jones

Born from and fronted by the tall and talented leader, ‘Miss Jones’ (aka Esjay), an established personality, brand and band within the South African music, surf, fashion and celebrity circles. ‘Miss Jones’ is the ultimate package deal. Not only is her image strong, but so is her band and her songs: a killer brand! Stealing Love Jones has so far enjoyed 5 top ten hits in South Africa off their first studio album!

Rudimentals

We are a socially diverse, fun-filled act, and we strive to interact with people of all ages and tastes. We thrive on the fact that we defy compartmentalization and are really proud that our brand of music carries the "unique" label. The Music we write is a quest for the ultimate 21st century Pan African Ska party, comprising of dance-hall raps, reggae rhythms and a skanking back beat of vintage 70's Ska, with a brew of mbaquanga riffs and jazz and blues tones. This multi-layered musical offering is composed by 8 extroverted individuals, where youth and experience is blended into what is known as The Rudimentals.

Yolanda Yawa

She has travelled around the world with Women unite Marimba Band, Tucan Tucan Afro-latin Band and Coda as ambassadors for South Africa. Joining Coda was one of the best moves that Yolanda could have made as she has reached out to millions with her voice, words and sense of worth as an African woman. Within the first year Coda was nominated as one of the five best bands for the Top Billing/Momentum Awards of the Year in 2007, for its fresh original sounds and trendy fashion style .  Yolanda has since left Coda to realise her dream as a Solo Artist and successful entrepreneur.

Munro du Toit – Idols Star

Munro was born in Sabie, lived in Sedgefield and eventually moved to George where he matriculated in 2000. HeŒs a consummate guitar and harmonica player and already started his first band in Grade 9! After matriculating, he moved to Cape Town where he worked as a professional musician for a while.
He moved back to George and started studying whilst continuing to perform live and record songs. Today Munro holds a ND in Marketing Management. In
2006 he moved to Stellenbosch and together with his band ³ALPHA BELL² toured, performed and played all over the Western and Eastern Cape.
In June 2007 Munro decided to participate in Idols and achieved 3rd place ­ an indication of this rocker¹s immense popularity in a pop competition!

Hot Water

HOT WATER is captained by South Africa singer-songwriter, composer and guitarist Donovan Copley. The result is a fusion of powerful, uplifting sounds and voices with a valuable role to play in the New South Africa. Hot Water’s sound ranges from upbeat South African beats (ala Graceland), Hopping Blues, Modern Folk ballads (ala Jack Johnson) and thought-provoking, inspiring cross-cultural gems (World-Roots music).

Shaun Tait winner of Supersterre

The winner of Supersterre 2006. In 2008 Shaun’s first album, his Supersterre prize, has almost reached Platinum status.  Sony BMG was so impressed with his performance that they have signed him up for another album which he is busy recording right now! Currently Shaun is working very hard on his new CD which he feels is going to be great and will be on the shelves shortly. Shaun also writes his own songs & at this stage his favorite is “Mal verlief op jou” which is the title of his new song.

Cherry Vinyl

Cherry Vinyl is a three piece band and their music can bedescribed as Light Rock with a Jazz Influence. They derive inspiration from Jack Johnson, John Mayer & counting Crows and although they cover some of their music, they prefer to stick to their own original songs.

Ashton Garner

Ashton Gardner brings a diverse range of acoustic songs that connect with different social, spiritual and relational themes. From brash and funky to moody and nostalgic you're sure to love his work! Artist he sounds like: Sting, Coldplay, Crowded House, Muse (unplugged!). Ashton has performed in numerous venues around Cape Town, often with his band. He has also played in the Middle East and the UK.  He runs a studio too doing albums for artists as well as music for the advertising and film industries.  His repertoire of music ranges right from pop to alternative to film music.

James Stewart Band

James is South African. Cape Town-born. He cut his teeth in classical music in the 70's with the usual childhood distaste and ‘messed around with break- dancing and synthesizers' in his early teens. The 90's however would see him form his own band, abandon a law career and take a leap into the great unknown. As singer/ songwriter for The Usual, he achieved fame in the late nineties with enduring classics like ‘the shape that I'm in ' and ‘like a vision, securing the band a special place in the hearts and homes of music lovers throughout South Africa . James and the Usual were rewarded with 2 national number 1's, two national number 2's, two South African Music Awards and a string of top ten.

Melanie Lowe

Melanie Lowe, Jhb based singer/songwriter, has just returned from a sell out tour as the support act for Katie Melua! Since coming third in the first South African Idols, she has been performing constantly around SA, at concerts, corporate functions, music festivals, fundraisers, schools and charity events. She has also performed many times with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra (who have arranged several of her original compositions for the orchestra to accompany her with), was an opening act for the Durban Westlife concert and supported Belgian artist, Sarah Bettens (ex K's choice) on a countrywide tour, along with Stealing Love Jones. 

Ike Moriz

International SA singer, producer & actor IKE MORIZ (Cosmopolitan hot talent) has recently embarked on a journey into the Jazz/Swing world and reemerges with a trilogy of new albums entitled STARDUST, BODY & SOUL and "ANGEL EYES (2009) featuring SA saxophonist Willie van Zyl and UK pianist A. McPike produced by Ike himself. The first 2 albums are currently being released online and will hit the shelves later this year in South Africa. Farryl Purkiss

South African born singer and songwriter picked up the guitar when he was 15 years of age and began writing songs shortly after his 16th birthday. He started performing outside of South Africa in 2007 and this led to the release  of his full-length debut album to high acclaim, chart success and award nominations.

Pixie Bennet

The Pixie Bennet Band formed in Jan 2008 with Members Pixie Bennett, Garth and Rob Warren. They played a small set at the KZN festival Splashy Fenn in their early days (Again gracing the Splashy stage in 2009) and then went on to work the Durban music scene. In September 2008 the performed at the White Mountain Folk Festival and a few months late the band welcomed new members Steve Murray and Andrew Makins (formerly Stealing LoveJones), while Rob set off to follow a solo career in music. Pixie entered into SA Idols, making it to the top 7 in 2009. After falling out of the show recently the band have been in huge demand, playing with Top SA bands Prime Circle, Zebra and Giraffe, Aking at the Mr Price Ballito, Performing at the Durban Vodacom July, Opening for top SA R&B artist Loyiso and entertaining at many corporate events.

Emile Minnie

In 2005 Emile was a top 10- finalist for the ATKV Crescendo-competition. In the same year he released his debutsolo album “ONDERWATER DROME”. The album was recorded by Frank Smuts, who also assisted with his album, “VLAM”.  Other artists that worked with Emile on the album was Rob Ogilvie on drums and Malcolm Aberdein on bass guitar.

A daredevil of a performer that does things her way – sliding across table tops & rocking electrifying showstoppers, strutting down catwalks and swinging from ceilings, on top of a bus or suspended over water, setting the sky ablaze with her laser violin or partying up a storm with her dancers – Caitlin is an electric violinist uniquely identified by her unstoppable energy and pure uninhibited passion.

Stereocharm

Stereocharm are a 5 piece band who hail from Somerset West, Western Cape.
The band was formed in August 2006 when Stuart and Brendan decided to call an end to their old band, Karma-Natural, and start a new project. They came across 3 other talented musicians in Wesley Loots (Surreal), Morgan Hargrave, and Graham Swart (Surreal). Since then they have gone from pillar to post and have played a host of shows around the Western Cape. Last December Stereocharm released their self titled debut album. They recorded it at the studios of the Bed on Bricks, with a lot of help coming from Tim Rankin (the drummer of BOB). They have performed along side some of South Africas hottest rock acts such as Prime Circle, Bed On Bricks, Taxi Violence, Jesse Jordan Band and more.

Captain Stu

Captain Stu is a 6 piece band based in Cape Town, South Africa. Their sound is described as a mix of African, ska, funk, and reggae with pop influences. They focus on having fun and enjoying the music wherever they go. The band members consist with Nick Key (vocals), James Klopper (guitar and backing vocals), Ryan McArthur (bass/ upright), Clement Carr (saxophone/ keyboard), Jon Shaban (saxophone) and Devon Jones (drums). Their songs are fun, catchy and always get a smile on people’s faces.

Harry Curtis

Harry's singing and recording career started as recent as February 2005 when he performed at the Dockside Theatre in Cape Town together with six other bands. He was welcomed by two well known South African musicians to their recording studios. They were prepared to play, produce and mix albums, with Harry performing the vocals. Harry's first two albums, African Tributes to David Gates and Perry Como produced by musicians Tim Hoare and Tony Drake respectfully, were hugely exciting for him. Harry has always loved singing and admired artists with good voices, which are comfortable to listen too.
