"Our Cape-based customers have been asking for this kind of offering following the incredible success of our On Nicol store in Johannesburg, and we have for some time now been looking for a location that would do justice to what we had in mind," said Peter Arnold, the company's Director of Merchandise.

Arnold said when the V&A Waterfront approached them with a proposal to relocate to the Lower Level of Victoria Wharf, it provided Pick n Pay with the ideal opportunity to create a store to their exact specifications, and thus it presented the ideal solution.

"It goes without saying we had our share of construction and design challenges, but it was, without any doubt, worth it in the end, as what we are able to present to our customers today goes way beyond the expectation of your average supermarket – we believe Pick n Pay has brought
South Africa the future of retail: organic displays of innovative, exciting merchandise, carefully selected by specialists in their categories to ensure, not only an environment that is welcoming and appealing, but also an unsurpassable retail experience every time they visit the store, be it for a monthly shop, a quick cup of coffee or to pick up deli items for a picnic.

"What's more, our new location has meant we are able to do something for our customers almost unheard of in a retail context, and that is to provide them with on-grade parking right outside our front door – free of charge. With parking being at the premium it is in the city, this is a huge benefit to our shoppers and we are delighted to be able to offer it to them."

Said David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront: "Pick n Pay's new V&A Waterfront premier store represents the changing face of food retail, and we are honoured to be aligned with such an innovative development. The project presented a number of engineering challenges but the result is a fresh and vibrant space we are proud of.

"Of our 24-million visitors each year, 65% are South Africans who will appreciate the convenience of being able to shop for necessities as well as luxury foods, all under one roof, not to mention being able to park at store level."

The new store is a bright and vibrant environment that is subtly cosmopolitan while at the same time richly celebrates South African artisanal products and small enterprise. What adds to this store's uniqueness is the fact that it will be run by people who are passionate about food: Pastry chefs, sushi chefs, bakers and even the myriad assistant chefs behind the scenes prepping the salads, have all been selected for their love of food. There will be 12 professional chefs on hand to advise customers on everything from the best cut of meat to the best way to poach salmon; and qualified sommeliers are on standby to dispense advice on the vast selection of wine available.

Shoppers can look forward to find a number of pleasant surprises in store in terms of range, such as the highest quality free-range duck, duck eggs and duck fat, supplied by Cape-based supplier, the Duck Farm. A family owned business where ducks are grain-fed and reared completely free of antibiotics, growth stimulants or hormones; we're delighted to be bringing our customers this exclusive offering.

Coffee lovers will be thrilled to know that we have an exceptional range of coffees, some of which include Origin, Truth, Caffe Vergano and Lucaffe, along with a quality range of coffee machines and accessories. They can also look forward to the rich flavours of Bean There Organic Ethiopian Blend as our house blend which can be enjoyed as cappuccinos, Lattes, Freezos and more. Tea has been also been given the royal treatment – refreshing loose-leaf Toni Glass tea will be served in a variety of flavours as our take-away option; and a far wider range than ever before will be on offer to purchase in the grocery section, including brands such as Pukka and Creativi-tea. Shoppers are invited to experience the all-new the tasting area where they're welcome to taste the various teas and coffees on offer before purchasing.

Another exciting treat to look out for is the moreish gelato in a range of decadent flavours such as White Chocolate Cheesecake, Green Apple, Tiramisu and Turkish Delight; and if that's not enough to satisfy, try our delicious fresh pizza that comes in a variety of toppings – to order in store and made fresh on the spot. Other new additions are the Burger Bar where succulent burgers and Prego rolls are the order of the day, and fall-off-the-bone whole free-range chickens, roasted on an open rotisserie.

Our Deli section boasts an extensive selection of local and imported cold meats and sausages and will also have a selection of healthy, crisps salads; hot and cold meals and fresh sandwiches throughout the day. When it comes to cheese, we have it all: From Camembert and Roquefort to Scarmoza and plain old Cheddar, expect to find cheese from every corner of the globe, including right here at home.

Fresh produce too presents a superb range, with items such as micro-herbs, exotic mushrooms and an extended Organic range, while at our bakery all breads and pastries are baked according to traditional artisanal techniques – our authentic ciabatta particularly is a must. Also on offer to tempt are our freshly baked cakes, giant gourmet muffins, cupcakes and the freshest Danish pastries.

Our world-class butchery will stock the Japanese delicacy, Kobe beef (when in season), Angus, dry-aged and free-range beef. Also available are the highest quality ranges of veal and lamb cuts, a range of free-range pork and free-range poultry. And no butchery would be complete without biltong, and we'll have plenty of it – pre-packed and loose-selling. Butchery manager, Gregory McGregor, who comes with 30 years of butchery experience, will be on hand to provide expert assistance.

Sustainably farmed kabeljou, langoustines and a variety of freshly caught salmon is just a fraction of what customers can expect to find in our fish shop. Choose from either fresh whole Norwegian Salmon or fresh whole Scottish Salmon for our fishmonger to fillet, clean or debone or choose from our frozen range, some of which includes whole orange crab and our exclusive new Arctic Frost range of high-quality frozen seafood, sourced from sustainable fisheries and fish farms around the world.

Our famous sushi will be a feature in the store and will be better than ever – served up by no less than six highly skilled sushi chefs.

When it comes to our wine selection, customers couldn't be blamed for thinking they're at a wine estate – with 800 wine lines from 200 brands and over 150 wine estates – including PnP's very own branded wine – they'll have quite a time choosing between our incredible range of top South African wines, "Award Winners" and the "Wine of the Month". They may even want to try something from the smaller, but just as impressive, international selection. On offer too will be the very best 100 local sparkling, MCC and French Champagnes and a range of beautiful stemware and wine accessories. Our wine prices will be the same as if you'd buy them directly from the wine estates. For all you other liquor requirements a PnP Liquor Store is located right next door.

The store also has a PnP Clothing section with all the latest fashions, and a health and beauty section carrying brands such as Maybelline and Revlon. A lovely selection of glassware, cookware, accessories, and cookbooks has been chosen with great care especially for this store.

Our flowers too will be of the finest quality – freshly cut varieties, orchids, and the best fynbos will be for sale. As it's nearly the festive season the store will boast a beautiful selection of gifts, decorations, and festive treats from mince pies to Christmas puddings: in fact all your holiday season needs.

"We are very excited about showing customers our new offering," said Arnold. "We have created a unique offering in a unique location and now all that remains is for them to come and experience it."

Smart shoppers look out for bonus point offers throughout the store and 10% off on literally hundreds of products.

2013-11-27T22:00:00Z
