Residents of Cape Town are set to benefit from cheaper taxi fares in the city, following the roll out of a new contactless, smart card fare payment system. Those travelling between the city centre and the V&A, can now use the TAP-I-FARE™ technology to pay for their transport. This new electronic fare collection system has been installed in 40 taxis operating on the route, eliminating the need for passengers to carry cash on-board.
The TAP-I-FARE™ card can be used on taxis and the MyCiTi bus service, and replaces cash payments. The pre-paid card concept is similar to pre-paid airtime with a voucher.
Benefits for the commuter range from fast, secure, easy payment, the convenience of being able to check your balance in the vehicle, and no need to have a bank account or risk carrying cash.
Discounts will be made available to those who use the new technology, with card holders charged a flat rate of R3.50, while commuters without a card are required to R4 for the same trip.
On Wednesday, 1 February 2012, a TAP-I-FARE™ Retail Point will be located next to the coach parking area on Breakwater Blvd, across from the Mugg & Bean open parking lot.
The first 1000 TAP-I-FARE™ cards will be sold at just R10 per card, and thereafter at R20 per card.
